Malta passport visa-free countries

The full list of visa-free countries for Malta passport holders

Maltese passport holders don’t need to get a visa before visiting 187 countries. In most of these countries, Malta citizens don’t get any visa if they go there for some purposes, for example, tourism or a business trip. Others require investors with a Malta passport to obtain a visa on arrival.

Some countries, for example, the USA and Canada, require getting an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) beforehand. The process of obtaining an eTA is entirely remote, and usually, it is cheaper and faster than getting an average visa.

In addition, even in visa-free countries for Malta passport holders, travellers are usually required to have documents proving that they have funds to stay in a country, a place to live and medical insurance. Also, a return or an onward ticket is necessary for some countries because one can be refused entry without it.

Please observe the list of Malta passport visa-free countries below. The circumstances may change, so we advise you to check the visa requirements before your journey.

Travelling to the Schengen Area with a Malta passport

Malta is a Schengen state, so its citizens may travel visa-free to any country in this area or reside there without getting a residence permit beforehand. They can study, work or run a business there.

If you wish to move to another Schengen Area country with a Malta passport, we advise you to check the terms of staying in the country.

Usually, it is required to register in a police station or an immigration service office after three months of living in the country, but every state has its particular rules. For example, EU citizens moving to an apartment or a house in Austria have to register with the competent authority within three days, and failing this procedure is considered an offence.

In some countries, the visa requirements for Maltese citizens are even milder: for example, in Sweden, Malta passport holders may live without getting a residence permit even after three months of stay. They need to be listed in the Swedish Population Register only if they intend to stay for more than a year.

A temporary or permanent residence permit in Malta also allows investors to travel to the Schengen Area visa-free. They may stay there for 90 days out of 180.
